There are a number of types of head lamps, some using LEDs which offer a better illumination than halogen bulbs. The disadvantage with the LED headtorches is that they have a limited distance range and therefore are more suited to medium to short range work.

Silva L1 Camo head lamps are made for long ranges and have a range of about 63 metres. These led lamps produce a 3 Watt output and are ideal for skiing or running. There is an external battery, which gives an additional 300% illumination and enables you to store the batteries inside a jacket if it is cold. Their weight are 226 grams inclusive of the batteries and there is an illumination time of 200 hours when using power save mode.

Princeton Tec Scout head torches are very lightweight and compact and made to last a lifetime. The LEDs result in the fact that they can light almost any environment. The Scout headlamp can be removed from the head band and be connected to a rucksack, cap or belt, anywhere that you require light.

Princeton Tec Quad headtorches are the lightest in Princeton Tec's range of LED headlamps. 4 bright LEDs make up these lamps and can light the darkest environments. These lamps are very small and can pack away easily and won't get in your way. There is 150 hours output, a hinged bracket and they are waterproof up to a metre. There is also a battery meter for the 3 AAA supplied batteries.
