Cope well with 'on the beat' abuse
Adam, Special Constable
– Solid construction
– Nice quality leather (easy to polish!)
– Tons of ankle support
– Waterproof and keep you feet dry and warm
– Factory fit seems slightly on the tight side
– They feel quite heavy compared to some other duty boots
– Not the best ventilation
When my old Bates duty boots started looking a bit tired I thought perhaps it was time for a change and started purusing the patrolstore website, looking through all the usual pages of Magnums, Lowas and Bates products. Nothing really jumped out at me and I was at a loss as to what brand to go for, having previously owned both Magnums and Bates boots, until Di at Patrolstore asked if I wanted to try a new brand they were stocking, Robusta.
Robusta wasnt a manufacturer I had heard of before so I had a browse online and couldn't find that much information about them. What I did notice from their website was the sheer amount of different boot designs and options they produce. Its an impressive selection. On the positive recommendations of Patrolstore, I thought I may as well give them a go, fast forward a couple of days and a package arrives at my door containing a pair of shiny new Robusta's GTX Travertino black leather assault type boots.
First Impressions are everything and my first impressions of these boots certainly lived up to their name. They look, for lack of a better word, robust. The leather looked of decent quality as did the lacing harware. They felt well made, if not a bit heavy when I took them out of the box and I immediately noticed the small 'Goretex' plaque on the side of each boot. Having worn nongoretex boots throughout the winter and suffered my fair share of post-shift wet feet, this small plaque filled me with hope, 'At last i'll manage a whole night shift without getting soaking feet!'
So far so good I thought, now lets try them on and test the fit. This is where things go slightly down hill unfortunately. I immediately noticed a tightness around the middle top of my foot, around the in-step. It was a rather uncomfortable rubbing tightness but I initially I thought it must just be new boots that were not broken in yet. I wore the boots all day and the tightness remained and by day two it was beginning to get rather painful. I decided at that stage to remove the insoles and try some different ones and upon removing the factory insoles, I was surprised as to their depth and how heavily padded they were. Immediately upon removing the insoles, the fit improved immeasurably. The boots felt snug but not overly tight around the foot and I was very happy with the amount of ankle support they seemed to offer.
After a full week of wear with lots of walking, running and driving, the boots still felt very stiff and didn't really seem to 'break in' but none the less, with thin insoles they were reasonably comfortable and provided good solid support. I must admit that in my opinion, where my old Bates boots felt a bit like wearing comfortable training shoes, wearing these Robusta boots I was very aware I was wearing leather boots. They felt heavier and more constricting than I am used to but on the other hand, I feel that this was beneficial in terms of foot and ankle support.
Unfortunately during my first week of testing, there were no freak hurricanes or tidal waves and I didnt really get a chance to thoroughly test the boots waterproof capabilities, although they coped admirably with some wet evening foot patrol and the frequent puddles and splashes were no obsticle to their Goretex protection. I did notice that on hot days when on foot, my feet felt hotter than normal although I suppose that by going for a more protective and waterproof boot you do sacrifice some level of ventilation.
After a week of 'on the beat' abuse the boots coped well and although they may not feel as lightweight as some other offerings, if you need a solid duty boot with good ankle support and waterproofing they seem to be a good option. The boots themselves were off good quality construction and they look like they'll survive a healthy amount of abuse. My only advise to purchasers would be try on the boots before you buy as it would appear the off the shelf sizing is slightly on the tight side.
